So after years of thinking about it, weeks of dreaming it, I finally took the plunge and upgraded my PC. And so far it’s been well worth it.

I can’t imagine using my Intel P4 3.2GHz based PC again for much more than a foot rest. (The fans are all so noisy after all these years it’s nearly worthless to try and use it for any extended period of time.)

I really needed something for my gaming and music projects so I decided to go balls to the wall and “pimp my ride” as the kids say these days. (Do “they” still say that?) I did quite some research and settled on a Intel Core i7 based PC with all the trimmings.

Let’s get to the parts list so we can discuss from there.

So there we go the inventory from which my newly created electronic thrasher will spring.

I’ve installed Windows 7 Ultimate and virtualized my Windows Vista work PC using VMWare Workstation 7.  Running my virtual work PC and a second virtual station with Windows Server 2008 x64 running for some work related tests my resource usage is still quite low. While I’m listening to iTunes and running FireFox with quite the array of tabs.

I’ve done a little bit of gaming (World of Warcraft, Half Life 2) with all of the settings set to their maximum possible value and let me just say; “=-o”. I didn’t realize just how much detail and sparkly cool effects existed within the World of Warcraft until this past week.

I was also able to start work on getting my DAW back into order and found that Cakewalk’s Sonar 8.5 Producer Edition is just as insane with this type of electric-thrashing-power.

I’ll have a more detailed report on the experience and my disappointment in NewEgg.com in the coming days.
